Week of December 5th

Hi Everyone:

This is basically our last week of BMES for the semester, so check out the upcoming events if you want to keep your mind off of finals or take a break from design. BMESsenhaus and SWE Formal were awesome last week, and I heard from the people who volunteered at the WID that the new building is amazing! I will have to take a tour and check it out.

Tomorrow we are invited to an event hosted by the BME Grad Student Association, called Work/Life balance as a Professor. I am sure anyone interested in a career in academia (or just a nosey student) will find this interesting. We also have our last Science Olympiad of the semester, as well as Breakfast at Mickies Thursday morning. Make sure you have coffee with your scrambler, unless you want to sleep through your Thursday morning classes.

Check out the Calendar if you want more details about upcoming events, or if you want to signup for them. If you want to become a paid member of BMES, click Join BMES, send me an email, or just come to the final General Meeting of the semester this Wednesday.

Have a great week, and good luck in design!

Week of November 28th

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone had a relaxing Thanksgiving break - mine was a bit too relaxing, hence the late post. We have some fantastic end-of-the-semester BMES events coming up, including our familiar Science Olympiad and River Food Pantry. We also have three social events, with BMESsenhaus this Thursday, SWE Formal on Friday, and Breakfast at Mickies Dairy Bar next Thursday. If you want to be one of the first people inside the Wisconsin Institutes of Discovery, click on the link! Not much has changed from last weeks email, but remember we have our Final General Meeting of the semester on Wednesday, with Officer Elections for three positions (nominations are open up until the time of elections). The Princeton Review will be there offering discounts on their courses, including a free iPad with enrollment!

Check out the Calendar if you want more details about upcoming events, or if you want to signup for them. If you want to become a paid member of BMES, click Join BMES, send me an email, or just come to the final General Meeting of the semester this Wednesday.

Week of November 21st

Hi Everyone,

The past two weeks in BMES have been extremely busy (14 events!), so Thanksgiving could not be coming at a better time. Even though we do not have any events planned for this week, I thought I would let you know about the ones coming up right when you get back. We have our final General Meeting of the semester on December 1st, where we will hear from Lisa Waples about how to market yourself as a BME in the job world. The Princeton Review will also be there, offering exclusive discounts for preparatory classes to members of BMES. And in case you forgot, we have Officer Elections at the meeting, so send me an email asap if you want to run for any of the available positions (Freshman Representative, Industry/Research Chair, or Industry Relations Chair)!

We have a wave of social events coming up after Thanksgiving, so if you are interested in going to BMESsenhaus, SWE Formal, or grabbing a bite to eat at Mickies Dairy Bar before finals, click on the links or check out the calendar. Also, if you want to be one of the first to see the inside of the Wisconsin Institutes of Discovery, volunteer at the grand opening!

Check out the Calendar if you want more details about upcoming events, or if you want to signup for them. If you want to become a paid member of BMES, click Join BMES or feel free to send me an email. I am happy to answer any and all of your questions related to BMES, or BME in general.

Week of November 14th

Hi Everyone,

Class signups open this week, so I hope you have taken a look at what courses you will be taking next semester. If you have not decided on your classes, come to Course Advising tomorrow night at 6pm. Even if you know what classes you are taking, we could tell you a little about which professors we preferred. This week we also have a Pizza Sale on Monday, as well as Lab of the Month this Thursday. If you are interested in how stem cells are being used to develop the next generation of medical treatments, come tour Professor Li s Regenerative Medicine lab and see his bioreactor! I heard that there are only four others like it in the nation!

We have our weekly Science Olympiad and River Food Pantry events, so if you want to volunteer, those are your best bets. In addition, we have Girl Scout Junior Badge Day this week, where you can volunteer and teach girl scouts about science and engineering. Our annual Habitat for Humanity trip to Taos, New Mexico has a few openings at the moment, so email Sarah (sreichert@wisc.edu) ASAP if you want to go! Finally we have our much anticipated BMESsenhaus on the horizon. It will be on December 2nd - save the date.

Check out the Calendar if you want more details about upcoming events, or if you want to signup for them. If you want to become a paid member of BMES, click Join BMES or feel free to send me an email. I am happy to answer any and all of your questions related to BMES, or BME in general.

Have a great week!

Week of November 7th

Hi Everyone,

This week is going to be packed full of all sorts of BMES events, so if you have not been able to make many events recently, read on! We have our fifth General Meeting this week at 6pm in 1610 EHall, with Craig Conner of Design Concepts as our featured speaker. We will also have a representative from Kaplan coming to the meeting to give some information about MCAT/GRE preparation, as well as exclusive course discounts for paid BMES members! Also, money and forms for our National Habitat Trip are due at the meeting, so if you have not heard from Sarah about this, send her an email at sreichert@wisc.edu. Finally, we will be voting on the top three T-shirt designs at the general meeting, so come if you want your voice heard!

Our other events this week include our weekly Science Olympiad and River Food Pantry volunteering opportunities, as well as some newbies. Immediately following the general meeting, we will have the BME Track Panel Seminar, and on Thursday we are working with BME grad students to host a Grad School Panel. Thursday night, we are hosting Freshmen Movie Night with INCEPTION showing in Tong Auditorium (ECB) - no, Inception is not *officially* released on DVD, but we got our hands on a copy! This Friday we have our second industry trip, this one to Bjorksten, an engineering company located in Madison. Finally, BMES is having a Football Tailgate this Saturday before the Badgers play Indiana.

Check out the Calendar if you want more details about upcoming events, or if you want to signup for them. If you want to become a paid member of BMES, click Join BMES, send me an email, or just come to the General Meeting this Wednesday and hear from Craig Conner of Design Concepts.

Week of October 31st

Hi Everyone:

I hope you survived the crazy weekend in Madison! BMES participated in some Halloween festivities last week with pumpkin carving at the general meeting, and trick-or-treating for cans on Saturday. We rounded up 291 pounds of food in less than three hours of trick-or-treating, and with the help of the other orgs, we amassed 2415 total pounds! Just so you know, our Pizza Sale has been CANCELLED today. Our events this week include Science Olympiad and the River Food Pantry on Wednesday and Friday, respectively. We have one spot left in our Local Habitat for Humanity this Friday. We will be working from 11:30am to 4pm, so if you want to warm up for National Habitat, email Sarah ASAP at sreichert@wisc.edu to grab the last spot! Speaking of National Habitat, if anyone is interested in our trip to Taos, New Mexico this January, email Sarah (sreichert@wisc.edu) or myself for more information, or to be added to the wait list (it is already full!).

Check out the Calendar if you want more details about upcoming events, or if you want to signup for them. If you want to become a paid member of BMES, click Join BMES or just send me an email. I am happy to answer any and all of your questions related to BMES, or BME in general.

Week of October 24th

Hi Everyone:

After an amazing weekend for football fans in Wisconsin, we have another action-packed week in BMES. In terms of Capture the Flag, we did not fare so well - IIE brought numbers and was able to narrowly defeat us. BMES showed great support of our community last week by volunteering at the River Food Pantry, Science Olympiad, and Special Olympics Bowling. This week, we have another General Meeting on Wednesday at 6pm in 1610 Engineering Hall, where we will be having our annual BMES pumpkin carving competition! We will also have our second Lab of the Month this Thursday. On Saturday, BMES will be out trick-or-treating for cans, so if you want to participate, sign up online. I know it is the Saturday of Halloween weekend in Madison, but do not worry, you will definitely be home in time for the Halloween festivities!

Check out the Calendar if you want more details about upcoming events, or if you want to signup for them. If you want to become a paid member of BMES, click Join BMES, send me an email, or just come to the General Meeting this Wednesday and participate in the pumpkin carving competition. Trust me, you do not want to miss it!

Week of October 17th

Hi Everyone:

First of all, I hope everyone had a chance to see the Badgers rock the Buckeyes this weekend! Last week we had another great turnout for the River Food Pantry, but we are still in need of volunteers for Science Olympiad on Wednesdays. If you are pursuing BMES Distinguished Membership, check out our wide range of events this week. We have fundraisers, outreach events, and social events, so if you want to get involved, this is your chance!

This week we have some recurring events, including Science Olympiad and the River Food Pantry , as well as two social events - Capture the Flag against IIE and an ALPs High Ropes course. We also have our second Pizza Sale, so come out and help, or stop by to say hi and grab a slice to support BMES!

As always, all of the events are listed below in detail. Check out the Calendar if you want more details about upcoming events, or if you want to signup for them. If you want to become a paid member of BMES, click Join BMES, or send me an email.

Week of October 10th

Hi Everyone:

The past week was busy for our members and especially many of our officers. Eight of our officers attended the BMES National Conference down in Austin, Texas where we were able to network with other BMES chapters and share ideas. One of the highlights of the trip was when we received the Commendable Achievement Award, which is basically an award for runner-up to the best student chapter in the nation! If you want a more detailed account of our trip, check out the posts below.

This week we have some recurring events, including Science Olympiad and the River Food Pantry, and next week we have two social events - Capture the Flag against IIE and an ALPs High Ropes course. Make sure to come to our General Meeting this Wednesday to hear all about our upcoming activities!

As always, all of the events are listed below in detail. Check out the Calendar if you want more details about upcoming events, or if you want to signup for them. If you want to become a paid member of BMES, click Join BMES, send me an email, or just come to the General Meeting this Wednesday. At our General Meeting we will hear from our first industry speaker of the semester - Chris Wegener of Fenwal Blood Technologies.

See you Wednesday!

Second Day of National Conference (10/8)

Hi Everyone:

Today we woke up for the Student Chapter Development Workshop at 10:00am. We heard from Cornell, the winner of the Meritorious Award, about how to better branch out into our community and promote our biomedical engineering department. One idea is to hold a seminar to promote our work, possibly recruiting local high school students to the department. We could also give back to our local community, or even a national or international cause by hosting a fundraiser where all profits are donated. One idea for the event is to host a poker tournament with some small prizes for the winners.

When we get back to campus, we will continue our efforts to become more involved with both our faculty and the graduate students in biomedical engineering. Our graduate student BME organization is relatively new, so hopefully we can begin to host joint events.

We had some amazing Texas BBQ at The Iron Works before heading back to conference, where we attended the BMES Student Leader Workshop. This was basically a continuation of the morning session. We were able to make many connections with other student chapters, such as Marquette and UC Davis. Everyone wanted to know how we are able to attract so many members and host so many events, so we were able to share a lot of our ideas and strategies.

At 6:30pm, we attended the "Special Event" at the Bullock Museum, where we socialized with BMEs from all over the US while enjoying some great food. Our plan for tomorrow is volunteer at the conference until 12:30pm, and then begin the long ride back to Wisconsin.

See you Wednesday!
